  • new fluffy bed runners
  • fresh new paint on the towel rails

  • brand new large toaster in the kitchen

It's Dickens time at Chatsworth House.  From November the halls at Chatsworth have been decorated and transformed into Dickensian London.  You can visit scenes from Dickens stories this Christmas at Chatsworth House. Tickets need to be booked.

Dickens by twilight can also be booked for Thursdays and Fridays from 23 November to 22 December.  This will include a mince pie, wine and live music from traditional bell ringers and strings trio.

Don't miss out the Chatsworth garden and farm shop too while visiting Chatsworth House this Christmas.

It's starting to feel like Christmas at the holiday cottages now.  The trees are up and decorated and we have our Christmas tree in the village too at Litton Mill next to Riverside House.  This weekend I'll be visiting both holiday cottages to make sure everything is ready for our Christmas and New Year guests; topping up glasses, checking kitchen supplies generally, checking decor, making sure there are plenty of logs and kindling and just generally giving everything a once over.

We've already got bookings for Christmas 2016 at both holiday cottages for next year, but if you are looking for New Year 2016 these breaks are both available at Valley View and Riverside House.  And if you are thinking even further ahead we can take bookings for Christmas and New Year 2017 based on 2016 prices.

The winter and Christmas in the Peak District are beautiful especially on crisp frosty and snowy days.  Many of us plan to be away over Christmas and the New Year, and at this time of year you do need to spend more time planning your journey to your holiday cottage.

Most people will be driving to their holiday cottage.  Before you set off make sure the car is packed with some winter travelling essentials such as extra blankets, a spade, a flask of coffee or tea, towels, warm clothes and footwear, gloves, scarves, hats and waterproof outer layers.

Pack some food for the journey, sandwiches, soup in a flask, fruit or some high energy snacks.  Keeps some drinking water handy too.

Make sure your mobile is fully charged before you set off, and consider investing in a car charger for the journey.

Check the car is ready for winter travel.  Top up windscreen fluid, check oil levels, check your tyres and tyre pressure - do this in advance of your journey.  You might even consider investing in some winter tyres or snow tyre socks (these can be bought online, but can only be used on tyres when roads are snowy).  Fill up with petrol or diesel  before you set off it is one less thing to worry about.

If travelling with children make sure you have snacks and drinks for them, warm clothes, extra blankets and pillows and travel with plenty of games suitable for playing on car journeys.  Music and books on CD's are also great for long journeys.

If you are travelling with your dog do make sure that they are secure, ideally in a crate with their bedding or strapped in securely with a dog seat belt.  Keep water in the car for the dog as well as some snacks and their regular dog food.  If the journey is slow because of the weather don't forgot to stop at regular intervals to let you dog out to stretch their legs.

Before you set off check the weather conditions along your route and at your holiday cottage destination.   Ideally check a few days in advance of your journey and don't forget to ask your holiday cottage owner about local weather conditions.  They may even be able to give you a slightly earlier check in if the weather is looking bad and can certainly advise you on local road conditions.

At Visit Peak holiday cottages we advise all our guest to take out winter holiday insurance.   Locals will keep local roads and lanes gritted as they need to use them too.  We are always happy to speak to our guests about travelling to our holiday cottages in the winter.
