There's plenty going on this Easter in the Peak District.  We've put together a guide of a few of our selected highlights for families young and old.  So why not pop over to the Peak District this Easter and join in the fun?

  • There's Easter holiday fun at Calke Abbey. The Cadbury egg hunt in the meadow runs daily from 14-16 April 11 am to 3.30 pm. Pick up a map and follow the clues to the treasure at the end!  There are also nature-themed activities and lovely walks to enjoy for all the family.
  • Why not climb the towers of St Mary's and All Saints Churches in Chesterfield?  You'll get stunning views of the Crooked Spire and the town.  The tour lasts about 40 mins and do book in advance.
  • Loads of family fun at Conkers indoor and outdoor play and adventure in a national forest.  From 1 to 23 April there are various activities and events including a circus, Punch and Judy, sublime science, juggling, craft and ranger activities and and an Easter egg challenge.
  • At the Tropical Butterfly, Wildlife and Falconery Centre from 1 to 23 April there's an Easter Mad about Madagasgar theme.  You can meet species close up, take part in an Easter Egg hunt (Easter Sunday and Monday), enjoy tractor trailor rides and there are Easter bunnies and chicks to meet.

These are just a few of the Easter events going on for families in the Peak District.  We've picked a few that offer something a little bit different.  We hope that you enjoy them!  Happy Easter holidays!

Looking for a Bank Holiday day out in the Peak District?  We've picked our top 5 things to do this Bank Holiday weekend.  From Chatsworth House to well dressing there is something for everyone.

Chatsworth House, A Grand Tour of the Devonish Collection

Many aristocrats made the Grand Tour in the 17th to 19th centuries, exploring art, culture and politics.  This exhibition, which is part of the house admission fee, shows how the Grand Tour influences Chatsworth as it is today.

For little ones the farmyard, adventure playground, maze and gardens at Chatsworth are ideal for letting off steam.  For parents and grandparents its' worth noting that there is a local brass band playing in the rose garden on Sat, Sun and Mon of the Bank Holiday.

Eyam Carnival and Well Dressing

From Sat 27 August for one week, and over the Bank Holiday weekend there's the Carnival on 27 Aug with a parade, floats, fancy dress and a sheep roast.  If you are wondering what Well Dressing is all about it is the ancient custom of dressing the well with flowers in the form of lovely pictures (see picture above).  The well blessing will take place on Sat 27 August.  Well dressing is unique to the Peak District.

If you fancy staying longer in Eyam, which is after all the famous Plague village, take a look at the museum which tells the story of how the bubonic plague arrived in Eyam and how the villagers sealed off the village to prevent it spreading further.

The Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, Bank Holiday Special

From 10 am Sat 27 Aug to 5 pm Mon 29 Aug why not visit the 23 acres of the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton where there's a special weekend of events in the Garden Marquee and outdoors on the Prom.  There's stalls, children's entertainment and plenty of places to eat and drink including the excellent Pavilion Cafe.  Whilst there take a trip round the spa town of Buxton; visit the source of Buxton spring water, walk to the upper town for independent shops and pubs, take a ride on a vintage tram or visit the famous opera house.

Matlock Farm Park

If you've got little ones to amuse Matlock Farm Park will be a great day out.  Over the Bank Holiday weekend there's some extra events, on Sat 27 Aug, Strongman Day and on 29 August Superheroes and Princesses Day.  The little ones dress up and can take part in interactive shows (11.30 am and 2.30 pm).  And if that's not enough there's the animals; from cuddles with small animals, meerkat feeding, owl encounter, ferret racing, meeting the reptiles and short pony rides.  Horse riding lessons can be booked in advance too.

The Hope Show

A great day out for all the family on Bank Holiday Monday 29 August, open from 8 am.  This is one of the major summer shows in Derbyshire and the Peak District.  Some of the attractions include sheep dog trials, show jumping, heavy and light horse displays, gundogs, vintage cars and tractors, crafts and food stalls.  It's the ideal destination for a full day out where you can enjoy the very best of the Peak District countryside and farming.
