The view in the picture is taken from the bridge next to our holiday cottage Riverside House.  Here you really can dream of the summer in this idyllic little hamlet of Litton Mill, with river views, country rambles and the sound of the river - in fact everything you need to relax, unwind and enjoy life.

Spring is definitely in the air, and this is a lovely time of year in the Peak District.  There are many different varieties of wildflowers in the Peak District and you need to start planning to visit soon to start spotting them.

The first flowers to come out are usually the Wood Anemone, but my favourite in the Peak District are the orchids that can be seen in the limestone dales.  There are some rare varieties, including Frog Orchids and Burnt Orchids, but easier to spot are the Tansley Orchids (shown in the picture), and the Early Purple Orchids of Lathkill Dale.  If you stay at Riverside House holiday cottage visit the local dales and around Priestcliff and Miller's Dale and you will spot these and many more wildflowers.

Along the riverbanks and in the wild garden at Riverside House you will see Butterbur, which produces spiked red flowers. These plants will eventually produce huge rhuburb-like leaves and they do provide a great spectacle, even though they divide the crowds! Kids tend to love them!

There are plenty of other wildflowers to see including wild garlic on bloom (spiky white flowers and a very pungent smell, you can't miss it really), cowslips,  and some of the rarer ones to look out for are Nottingham Catchfly (see these in Miller's Dale near Riverside House holiday cottage), Maiden Pink (Bradford Dale), and Knotted Pearlwort (Monk's Dale).

Are you planning a spring break?  The Derbyshire and Staffordshire Peak District has plenty of things to do and see.

There are fun family attractions such as alpine style cable cars at the Heights of Abraham.  They reopen daily from 21 March and whilst there you can take a woodland ramble, visit a 'savage' garden or enjoy a meal and views at the restaurant.   For those of you thrill seekers Alton Towers opens on 22 March or why try the tree tops near Buxton and Go Ape?  Whilst there you could also visit Poole's caverns for an underground experience second to none.

The Peak District is great for walking in the spring to see the vast array of wildlife and wild flowers.  There are traffic free trails, such as The Monsal Trail (ideal for cycling too with electric bike hire) as well as guided walks, hills, crags, moorland and riverside walks to explore.

Some of the country's best historic houses are found in the Peak District, such as Chatsworth HouseHaddon Hall and many National Trust gems.  Haddon Hall has a spring decoration workshop running.

The Peak District is well known for its' locally sourced food and liquid refreshments.  Why not pop over to the Staffordshire town of Leek and visit the Fine Food Market?  Spring dates are 18 April and 16 May, from 9 am to 3 pm in the market square.

If you love English beer a trip to the Wincle Beer Co on the edge of the Peak District National Park is recommended.  The shop is open 7 days a week and if you catch a lovely spring day you can sit outside the stone barn where the beer is brewed and enjoy some liquid refreshments.

Why not visit one of the many charming Peak District towns?  In the picture is Ashford-in-the-Water a beautiful place to wander, visit the famous sheep dipping bridge, walk along the banks of the river Wye or sample two of the Peak District's lovely pubs as well as a deli.  It is particularly lovely in the spring as our picture shows.
