Planning a short break in the Peak District?  Our National Trust guide to days out in the Peak District can help!

  • The White Peak Estate including Ilam Park and Dovedale has some beautiful walking areas, such as the stepping stones shown in the picture above. For the adventurous there's a 10-mile circular walk taking in the Estate with limestone caves, (the stepping stones) and spectacular scenery.  Our holiday cottage Valley View offers immediate access to this area, so is ideal for exploring The White Peak Estate.
  • Sudbury Hall and the National Trust Museum of Childhood.  The late seventeenth century Hall has many highlights including a Gainsborough of Lady Vernon, a 1930s kitchen, an amazing long gallery, great staircase, carvings in the dining room and some stunning ceiling paintings. And if you are a Jane Austin fan walk in the steps of Mr Darcy, as Sudbury Hall was used for the 1996 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.  The Museum of Childhood reopens in February half-term where you can visit a Victorian school and museum.
  • Eyam House and Craft Centre. A Jacobean Manor with a walled garden, two kitchens, family portraits of the Wright family lived in by 11 generations.  There's a craft centre in the stable yard with local crafspeople and special gifts including Eyam Real Ale, Hartington Cheese, recycled handcrafted wood, pre-loved books and a cafe.  A scenic walk around Eyam is also a must do.
  • Lyme Park, House and Garden. Step back into the Regency era and the life of Thomas Leigh of Lyme, a great traveller, romantic hero and entrepeneur.  The house is glorious and the gardens are well worth visiting with stunning views and an ancient deer herd.

A short break or weekend in the autumn is perfect for getting out in the countryside and being active.  In the Peak District there are plenty of walks and cycle routes (some traffic free) that are ideal at this time of year.

Our favourite has to be The Monsal Trail, a stretch of traffic free walking or cycling that runs from Bakewell, via the stunning Monsal Head viaduct to a couple of miles outside of Buxton.  It is about 8 miles long in both directions and there are three tunnels along the route to provide a reminder of our railway heritage.  All the tunnels are open to the public as part of the trail.

The Monsal Trail is suitable for all ages and all abilities.  For young children and families pick a stretch of the trail around Hassop Station so that you can enjoy the flat walks or hire cycles which come in all sizes.  At Hassop Station there's plenty of parking, cycle hire (including electric bikes), a cafe, restaurant, shop, bookshop and outdoor seating.

For groups of friends we suggest a trip both ways with bikes or on foot at least half the trail is possible or more.  There are also plenty of walks leading off the trail if you want to extend the walk.  For keen cyclists and moutain bikers it is possible to use the trail to link up to other tracks and routes and enjoy a full day out.

For walks with dogs The Monsal Trail is ideal for off the lead walks, but do bear in mind that at popular times of the year it can be busy with cyclists so you do need to keep an eye on your dog.

For those who are older or mobility impaired we suggest joining the Trail at Miller's Dale, where there is parking and flat, level access onto the Trail in both directions.

If you want to get out and about and get active in the Peak District this autumn, why not try The Monsal Trail? Our holiday cottage, Riverside House is only a stone's throw from the Monsal Trail too!

The latest UK self catering holiday trends seem to indicate that us Brits are opting for shorter staycation breaks, with the traditional two-week holiday on the decline.  It also seems that we are spending more this year compared to five years ago, so that's all round great news for holiday cottage owners.

So what's the benefit of taking a UK short break self catering holiday?

  • Short breaks are invaluable for destressing in short bursts and give an instant recharge to the batteries.
  • There's less planning involved, so you won't need to pack as much for a short break
  • You can take more short breaks, so it feels like more time away and you can choose to visit different places
  • It's a great opportunity to explore your own country and enjoy what it has to offer
  • You'll be contributing to the UK economy
  • Save money too by shopping in supermarkets and catering in your holiday cottage kitchen, avoiding expensive meals out
  • It's unlikely that you will fly to your UK short break destination, so the travel should be easier and journeys shorter
  • You'll be in your own country with no hassles of currency exchange or foreign languages
  • You can take all the family on a short break or holiday with friends instead
  • You can even take your four-legged friends, many self catering holiday cottages accept pets, so that will avoid expensive kennel costs
