Large self catering holiday cottages are ideal for family celebrations, special birthdays, anniversaries, reunions and groups of friends to holiday together.

When you book a large holiday cottage rental, you want to be sure that it is right for you and the group.

As holiday cottage owners we stay in our self catering cottages and use them with friends as our guests do.  That way we know what is needed to create the perfect self catering holiday cottage break.

We check the cupboards to make sure that there are plenty of glasses, so if you want to toast a special birthday or anniversary there's at least one glass each with spares.

We supply enough plates, bowls, mugs so that you can have a dishwasher load on with another whole set available for you to use.

There's plenty of information about the area, the walks, the pubs, restaurants, places to visit.   We can recommend places too for larger groups for dining out for special occasions and pub lunches.   We have contacts with a visiting spa and catering service for those really special group breaks.

For families and adults alike there are games galore, board games for all ages, table football, multi-games table, and at Riverside House a fully equipped games room including table tennis.  Wi fi is available at both cottages.

Both our holiday cottages have Sky Sports, BT Sports, Sky movies so there's never a chance to get bored, not matter what your interests.

And if the weather does turn inclement we provide an unlimited and free supply of logs and kindling so that you can keep dry and warm with a cosy glow.

We will be visiting again soon and making sure everything is in place for your group holiday cottage rental.  Let us know what things you'd like to see included to make the self catering break special?

There are many reasons why holiday cottage owners should stay in their own self catering accommodation.

Unless you actually stay somewhere, sleep there, use the oven, turn on the TV, sit on the sofa, load the dishwasher it is impossible to know what it is really like from the guests point of view.

What works?  What is uncomfortable?  Can you see things differently when sitting down?  Maybe an odd cobweb or two has escaped your view?  Are there cracked plates, chipped glasses, does the diswasher clean properly? Are the pillows comfortable or the duvets warm enough?

We stay in our holiday cottages for at least two or three mid-week nights about every six to eight weeks, sometimes with friends or family, sometimes on our own and sometimes with our dog.  Each time it's a different experience and each time we find little things that we wouldn't pick up otherwise.

Some of the jobs that we seem to do everytime we stay include: removing chipped glasses, plates, bowls and mugs, sharpening knives, putting back loose pages into the information folder, removing out of date information leaflets, replacing light bulbs, tidying the spare duvets and pillows, deleting recorded programmes from the Sky box and mending board games boxes.  All these jobs are small, but when you stay somewhere they are the annoying little things that make an impression.

Unless you stay a night or two in your own holiday cottage, you just won't pick up on all of these things or more.   It is the attention to detail that shows that you really care.  You can only find out exactly what needs attention if you stay in the holiday cottage yourself.

A different blog today.  I love using Twitter and social media to promote my holiday cottages so I thought I'd post a few tips I've learnt along the way.  Mainly this time using the hashtag (#) on Twitter.

  • Use the # symbol to categorize your tweets so that users can simply find you in these areas e.g. #holidaycottage #selfcatering #holidaycheer #familytravel #staycation or #bookdirect - these are some of my favourites, but there's plenty of others
  • Don't try and put too many #s in your tweet though it looks a bit cluttered and off-putting I think!
  • Do use topical #s in your tweets, so how about using #christmassy or #christmaslights to tweet about your holiday cottage Christmas decorations?
  • Try adding stickers to your tweets - it's fun and engaging. Tap to compose your tweet, tap camera and then tap sticker icon and have fun!  Then add a # that's relevant to the stickers.  #dogs #dogfriendly are some of the ones I use with stickers of dogs and paw prints.  Works well for dog friendly holiday cottages!

Don't leave your best four-legged friends at home when you go on holiday.  Bring your dogs on holiday with you and all the family will enjoy a self-catering cottage break.

Holiday cottages are ideal for pet friendly holidays, especially when located in the lovely British countryside.  There's always plenty of walks and outside fun to be had.

At both our holiday cottages, Riverside House and Valley View, we welcome up to five dogs.

Some of the fun things to do at the holiday cottages include splashing about in the river; going on traffic free walks on either The Monsal Trail or the Tissington Trail; visiting some dog friendly attractions and pubs and of course relaxing in front of the log fire.

There really is no need for expensive kennel fees when you can bring your dogs with you.

Ask us about dog friendly attractions, walks and pubs that are near our holiday cottages.

Or take a look at our Top 10 Dog Friendly Guide to the Peak District.

Are you lucky enough to be able to take a holiday cottage break outside of the school holidays?  Can you take advantage of economy season mid-week breaks? If you are retired or semi-retired or have some holidays left, these deals are ideal.

Now is the time to grab yourself a bargain.  Many holiday cottages will have some November and early December weekends available as well as mid-week break deals.

At Riverside House and Valley View holiday cottage, we have some great mid-week offers. Take a look at the box opposite this blog post and you will see our mid-week deals for November for both holiday cottages.   Both are available for 9 to 13 November at good reductions for 9 to 15 guests.  The price for a four night break is as low as £58 per person (based on 12 sharing at Riverside House) so why not take a last minute holiday with us?

I guess I've got that Halloween feeling, which means that this week the blog is about autumn dishes for a self catering holiday cottage break.

At our holiday cottages, Riverside House and Valley View the kitchen's are really well-equipped so that you cook almost anything.  We've even got blenders for hearty soups and cake tins for something sweeter.

Talking of soups why not try a roasted pumpin soup?  It's so simple, no need to peel the pumpkin, just cut into sections, roast until soft, remove skin.  Meanwhile gently sweat onions and other veg that you have to hand, add roasted pumpkin, vegetable stock and blend.  There you have it, my simple, speedy and tasty autumn pumpkin soup!

Other easy dishes for a large self catering group would be hearty casseroles - meat or veg, curries, hot pots, baked potatoes, roasted vegetables and for desserts try baked apples, crumbles or a wicked chocolate sponge!

I'd love to hear your easy self-catering recipies and tips.

Make sure you are ready for the Great British weather!  You'll either need sun cream and lots of it, a hat or cap or an umbrella - we suggest that you pack both!

As you are likely to be staying in a country holiday cottage, don't forgot there are more insects in the countryside!  Pack some midge repellent,  hay fever tablets and we'd recommend some citronella candles for sitting outside or mosquito coils.

If you are going to be in the big outdoors and going on longer walks than usual, pack your most comfortable and sturdiest walking shoes or boots.  Walking poles are a great help for descending and don't forget the waterproof!  Some tubi grip bandages might be handy in case you are unlucky enough to have a sprain.

Navigating in the countryside can be tricky, so our advice is to get a detailed OS map of the area you are staying in and take it with you. That way you can plan the days walking and outings and not get lost!

You'll want some memories to treasure of your self catering holiday, so don't forget the camera or mobile.  And of course the chargers too.

Check out what essentials are provided in your holiday cottage (toilet roll, dishwasher tablets, tea towels, salt and pepper, oil etc) and then make a list of what you'll need to bring.  Focus on the essentials only as you can do a local shop when there (part of the fun is shopping in lovely market towns for local produce) or you can get a supermarket delivery booked in.

If travelling with children and babies don't forget what they will need; bottles, beakers, nappies, some games and books, colouring pencils etc.

And if your four-legged friends are coming with you, things like dog bowls, dog treats, dog food, bedding, spare towels, doggy poop bags etc are all essentials to bring with you.

And finally just have some fun and enjoy your self catering holiday cottage break!

Never get bored at our self catering holiday cottages!  Just in case there's some rain out there we make sure that there's plenty of fun going on inside.  So we provide board games for all ages, young and old, for all the family or for adult groups.  There's some puzzles too, even a murder mystery game.  And if that's not enough Riverside House holiday cottage has its' very own games room.

So there's no excuse not to enjoy yourself when visiting our Peak District self catering holiday cottages.

Tell us about your favourite board game and we will see if we can include it at the holiday cottages.

The latest UK self catering holiday trends seem to indicate that us Brits are opting for shorter staycation breaks, with the traditional two-week holiday on the decline.  It also seems that we are spending more this year compared to five years ago, so that's all round great news for holiday cottage owners.

So what's the benefit of taking a UK short break self catering holiday?

  • Short breaks are invaluable for destressing in short bursts and give an instant recharge to the batteries.
  • There's less planning involved, so you won't need to pack as much for a short break
  • You can take more short breaks, so it feels like more time away and you can choose to visit different places
  • It's a great opportunity to explore your own country and enjoy what it has to offer
  • You'll be contributing to the UK economy
  • Save money too by shopping in supermarkets and catering in your holiday cottage kitchen, avoiding expensive meals out
  • It's unlikely that you will fly to your UK short break destination, so the travel should be easier and journeys shorter
  • You'll be in your own country with no hassles of currency exchange or foreign languages
  • You can take all the family on a short break or holiday with friends instead
  • You can even take your four-legged friends, many self catering holiday cottages accept pets, so that will avoid expensive kennel costs
If you are looking for a short break self catering holiday in the Peak District, visit our website for further information.

Holiday cottage reviews and testimonials are a key chink in your marketing armour.  Future guests will use them to make a decision whether to book with your holiday cottage or not. Both our holiday cottage websites have house guest book pages and they are the most visited pages on our websites after the bookings calendar.

Here's our testimonial page for Valley View holiday cottage.  www.dovedaleholidaycottage.co.uk

Having reviews and testimonials on Trip Advisor is important for your holiday cottage profile and does wonders for your marketing, but do beware that anything can be posted!  Our holiday cottages have had some fantastic feedback on Trip Advisor, here's a couple of the comments:

'Perfection! I can't say enough good things about this house. Every single thing we needed was catered for (and some things we never even thought of!)'

'Peak District perfection.  We (my friends and I) have spent a week at Riverside House each January since 2012 as part of an annual catch up. Each time I return it's like coming home. The holiday house itself is located in the peaceful and picturesque Litton Mill, which is ideally situated for walkers.

'Amazing week at Valley View. As a large party, we have booked many holiday houses in the past but can confidently say that our stay at Valley View was one of the best for a number of reasons. The location is fantastic if you are interested in great views and lovely walks directly from the house, whether along the river or one of the many circular walks around the locality. The facilities at the holiday house are second to none and were ideal for visitors of all ages from 6 months to 70 years.'

If you do get a negative comment, respond and write back with your comments, and give some reasons, what you are going to do about the issue or even whether you think the comment is a fair one or not.  The best thing is to engage in a conversation.

And when your guests leave don't forget to ask them for feedback, you can easily create a simple feedback form to email over to them.  The feedback that they provide is vital for making improvements, finding out what guests like and dislike and it helps you collect comments and testimonials to use on your own website.  If you can engage in a conversation with your guests they are more likely to remember you and you will give them the image of a caring holiday cottage owner.  You never know they may well be happy to write a Trip Advisor review for you and may well be prompted to come back again in the future.

Your holiday cottage is booked. Your suitcases are packed. However, you can’t quite bring yourself to ditch the work phone and laptop. If you really are unable to leave work behind for the duration of your self-catering break then try these 5 tips to have a more relaxing holiday.

  • Switch on your out of office. Even if you’ve told people you will be available, switch it on with a message saying you are away and will respond when able. This gives you breathing room and permission not to check your emails every 5 minutes.
  • Set aside specific times of the day that you will check in and deal with anything urgent. Perhaps an hour before breakfast and an hour after your evening meal. This sets yourself ground rules and also manages your holiday companions’ expectations.
  • If you must take a call or join in an audio conference, ensure you find a quiet place away from your holiday companions. You will be able to concentrate, making better use of the time, and it will be less distracting to all concerned.
  • Leave your work phone/tablet at your holiday cottage for at least one day of your holidays. You will be able to enjoy yourself more if you don’t have the pressure or temptation to check in.
  • Last, but by no means least, remember that you are on holiday! Relax, recharge and have fun!

One of the best things about a self-catering holiday, is the freedom to do as you please. You and your family are not bound by the set mealtimes dictated by the hotel you are staying in. In addition, you can choose to stay in and cook, or go out and find somewhere to eat. If you have children with you, or fussy eaters, it makes life so much easier if you have the facilities to quickly provide a favourite meal, even if it is beans on toast!

However, you don’t want to be away on holiday in a wonderful holiday cottage with breathtaking surroundings, and stuck in the kitchen for hours on end. It would hardly constitute a rest. The trick is to keep it simple.

So here are a couple of options for you to try. Enjoy your holiday!

Decadent Breakfast : (serves 2)
Ingredients: 2 eggs, some butter, 4 rashers of bacon, maple syrup, 2 thick-cut slices of bread.
Method:
Crack the eggs and whisk with a fork.
Cut the two slices of bread diagonally to form 4 triangles.
Heat a frying pan, and fry your bacon. Set aside.
Add a knob of butter to your frying pan. Dip one of the triangles in the egg and then turn over to coat the other side. Place in frying pan, and fry on medium heat turning over once, until golden on both sides. Repeat with the other triangles.
Place French toast on plates, top with bacon and drizzle with maple syrup.

Healthy Breakfast : (serves 2)
Ingredients: porridge oats, water, milk (whichever type you prefer), seasonal berries, mixed seeds, honey or maple syrup.
Method:
In a saucepan tip in 2 handfuls of oats
Cover with cold water, and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down and allow to simmer until the porridge is cooked and beginning to thicken.
Divide into two bowls.
Heat some milk (or you may wish to have it cold)and set aside.
Sprinkle a handful of berries, topped with a tablespoon of seeds over the porridge. Drizzle with honey.
Carefully add milk pouring down the side of your bowls.
