Do you love visiting traditional English pubs?  The Peak District has loads of pubs, many traditional, some modernised and plenty serving delicious hearty food.  Being a walking area many of the pubs in the Peak District welcome walkers and dogs so it's ideal for a day out, short break or longer stay, when you can take in one or a few pubs on a walk!

We've recently updated our list of recommended pubs with comments and suggestions that we hope you will find helpful.  Some of our favourites include the Red Lion, Litton; The Old Dog, Thorpe, The Church Inn, Chelmorton, The Coach and Horses, Fenny Bentley and The Devonshire Arms Hartington.

We base our reviews on friendliness of landlords and staff, quality and value of the food, range of beers and wines and how walker and dog friendly they are.  We also include some suggested walks to take in the pubs too.

One pub that is nearly on the list is The Angler's Rest in Milldale.  We are delighted that there are new reviews on Trip Advisor that are getting excellent comments.  Hopefully it will be on the list soon!

There are plenty of places to eat and enjoy a drink in the Peak District; these are some of our favourites ....

For dog lovers The Monsal Head Hotel Stable Bar is great.  Dogs are allowed in all areas and there are even free doggie biscuits at the bar. For two-legged guests the food is fantastic, as is the beer and wine.  And of course the location is pretty special with fabulous view over the Monsal viaduct and the Monsal Trail as well as being a great point for starting or breaking a walk.  There is plenty of parking.

For foodies Rowley's of Baslow is well worth a visit.  Fresh seasonal food using local ingredients in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.  They also appear in the Sheffield Cook Book, a book celebrating great food in the Peak District and Sheffield area.

For tea the Old Coach House tearooms in Tissington is ideal for the whole family.  In the summer you can sit outside and dogs are then welcome too.  There is great choice of cakes, scones, cream teas, coffees as well as lunches too.  Why not wander around Tissington?  It is a delightful village with a lovely pond and shops as well as some good walks.  There is plenty of off street parking.

For an evening drink, there are so many great Peak District pubs to choose from.  The George in Alstonfield could easily be included in the foodies section above as the food here is some of the best in the Peak District.  For a good typical pub with friendly staff and with food available too, one of our favourites is The Red Lion in Litton.  We've been going for nearly 20 years now and it never fails us.  The beer is good, as is the wine, and the food is always of a good pub standard.  Dogs are also welcome in the front area of the bar.  On a summers evening it is lovely to sit outside and admire the green in Litton.

All our recommendations are based on our local knowledge and all the places mentioned can easily be accessed from our holiday cottages, Riverside House or Valley View.   We have also produced some top 10 guides to our favourite dog friendly pubs, cafes and farmers markets and food shops.  Take a look at our top 10 guides of the Peak District for more information.
