If you are thinking of booking a large holiday cottage, here are some key tips when making an enquiry  – from a cottage owner’s point of view. Some may seem obvious, but there’s no such thing as a silly question when you’re planning your holiday!

1. Don't forget to include the dates that you are interested in on the enquiry email.  You’d be surprised how often people forget!  If you have a range of dates, give them in order of preference.  If you are flexible with your dates mention that too.

2. Do put down the numbers of adults and children in your group (and their ages). It really helps, as holiday cottage owners will know immediately if the cottage is the right size and suitable for the group.

3. Let the holiday cottage owner know the reason for your visit. e.g. family holiday, group reunion, walking holiday. At Visit Peaks we don't accept stag or hen parties (sorry) but it would be really helpful to know if that is the purpose of the visit, as we often recommend other holiday cottages in the area that do!

4. Mention if you have pets, what kind, and how many.  We do accept dogs (as well as cats, rabbits, gerbils and budgies!), but it never ceases to amaze me that people forget to mention that they want to bring their four-legged friends with them on holiday.  Many holiday cottages don't allow pets, so it is a crucial piece of information!

5. Ask for the price and if there are any hidden costs.  Are you surprised that this isn't tip number one?  Often it is not the key deciding factor in choosing a holiday cottage.

6. Hoping for a discount? Don't ask for 'the best price' (all our prices are good for the size of the accommodation and facilities, of course!) Instead ask if there are any offers on the website at the moment, or ask if there is a newsletter when reductions may be advertised.  Don't expect discounts for busy periods or weekends. If you can be flexible and stay mid-week that is the best time to get a discounted price.

7. Feel free to ask as many questions about the facilities as you like.  If you are travelling with young children for example, you’ll want to know if there are high chairs, stair gates, fire guards etc. Or if you are with a group of friends, you may want to know about the TV package, wi fi, available board games, etc.  If the number of bathrooms/ensuites is important to your group do ask, it might not be obvious from the holiday cottage details, so check it out.  As holiday cottage owners we love to talk about our facilities!

8. Ask about the area, what is there to do locally and further afield.  We love to tell you about this and we have plenty of insider knowledge to share.

9. Do ask about eating out too.  We visit lots of the local pubs and cafes and are always happy to pass on recommendations.  This is especially true for large groups as we can tell you which pubs are large enough to fit you all in, how far away they are, the standard of the food, beer, wine, whether dog friendly and plenty more!

10. If you are planning a special birthday or anniversary, ask how we can help.  We know caterers and spa services that can be booked at the holiday cottages.

I’ve saved my two “bonus tips” for the end, because they’re the ones people often forget…

11. Don’t forget to ask about mobile phone reception.  You don't want to be disappointed (especially with a rural holiday cottage) if the area doesn't have signal.  Although for some people that is a bonus!

12. You may also want to ask about wi fi speeds.  Our holiday cottage in Litton Mill has wi fi, but it doesn't have the fastest of download speeds, so it is something that you will need to know.  It isn't a deal breaker, but it is better to be forewarned!

Large self catering holiday cottages are ideal for family celebrations, special birthdays, anniversaries, reunions and groups of friends to holiday together.

When you book a large holiday cottage rental, you want to be sure that it is right for you and the group.

As holiday cottage owners we stay in our self catering cottages and use them with friends as our guests do.  That way we know what is needed to create the perfect self catering holiday cottage break.

We check the cupboards to make sure that there are plenty of glasses, so if you want to toast a special birthday or anniversary there's at least one glass each with spares.

We supply enough plates, bowls, mugs so that you can have a dishwasher load on with another whole set available for you to use.

There's plenty of information about the area, the walks, the pubs, restaurants, places to visit.   We can recommend places too for larger groups for dining out for special occasions and pub lunches.   We have contacts with a visiting spa and catering service for those really special group breaks.

For families and adults alike there are games galore, board games for all ages, table football, multi-games table, and at Riverside House a fully equipped games room including table tennis.  Wi fi is available at both cottages.

Both our holiday cottages have Sky Sports, BT Sports, Sky movies so there's never a chance to get bored, not matter what your interests.

And if the weather does turn inclement we provide an unlimited and free supply of logs and kindling so that you can keep dry and warm with a cosy glow.

We will be visiting again soon and making sure everything is in place for your group holiday cottage rental.  Let us know what things you'd like to see included to make the self catering break special?

Self catering holidays for large groups can take some planning.  Not only do you need to get everyone to agree on a date, but finding the right holiday cottage for a large group in the right location can be difficult.

Here's a few key questions to think about if you are planning a large group holiday cottage break.

Find out what is provided. Just how well equipped is the kitchen?  You want to make sure that there are enough plates, glasses and cutlery so that you can have one load in the dishwasher and still have plenty for the next meal.  How large are the ovens and hobs?  What cooking equipment is provided; are there enough saucepans, roasting trays to cook a large roast meal, large casserole pots or if you want to bake a cake at the cottage are cake tins provided?  Find out how large the kettle and tea pot are and what coffee making facilities are provided. You'll also need plenty of food storage space, including cupboards, fridges and freezers.   A holiday cottage that caters for large groups should provide all this and more.

Do ask about the sleeping arrangements, the number of bedrooms, what sorts of beds are provided?  Are they all proper beds or put you up beds?.  Some large holiday cottages like ours at Valley View and Riverside House will have beds that can be made up as king-size or twins, this is really helpful for large groups where guests want their own beds.  Find out about sofa beds, how large are they will they be made up in advance?  Is all the bed linen supplied, are extra pillows and duvets available if needed?

Make sure that you know the maximum number of guests that the holiday cottage will sleep.   Do stick to this number as the holiday cottage should have been equipped for this number of guests.  Your holiday cottage owners should also be aware of your numbers for fire and health and safety reasons.

Find out about local shops, local supermarkets and can deliveries be made?  In some rural self catering holiday cottages it can be a bit more tricky to get supermarket deliveries so make sure that you find out about this.  Part of the fun of being on holiday can be visiting a local town and shopping in the delis, greengrocers and butchers to buy local produce rather than the standard supermarket shop.  With a large group you can always divide the shopping up so you all contribute.   Try and plan some meals in to take advantage of the self catering facilities at the cottage.

Of course eating out is part of the enjoyment of a holiday, so ask about local pubs and find out if you need to book in advance for large groups.  Is there an extra charge?  Your holiday cottage owner should be able to supply you with a list of recommended pubs and restaurants in the area for large groups.   Here's some of our recommended places to eat for large groups in the Peak District.

What facilities are available at the holiday cottage for large groups?  At our holiday cottages we have large surround sound TVs, DVD, Blue Ray, Sky sports and movies, BT Sports, all in HD, as well as x-box, PS2, board games and books.  Plenty to keep large groups happy.  Valley View holiday cottage has table football and a multi-games table and Riverside House holiday cottage has its very own games room with pool, table tennis, air hockey, table football and more.  Wi fi is available at both holiday cottages and for cosy nights in we provide unlimited free logs at all times to enjoy the log burners.  One less thing to have to think about before you arrive.

Find out about days out in the local area suitable for large groups on holiday.  Both our holiday cottages are near to Alton Towers (30-40 minutes by car) which is an ideal day out for a large group.  Your holiday cottage owner should be able to suggest plenty of places to visit; we always recommend Go Ape, visiting local caves, some of the traffic free walks and cycling routes and Chatsworth House.  Take a look at our top 10 lists of things to do in the Peak District for more ideas.

With a little bit of planning and by asking the right questions a large group self catering holiday should be great fun.
