If you are thinking of booking a large holiday cottage, here are some key tips when making an enquiry – from a cottage owner’s point of view. Some may seem obvious, but there’s no such thing as a silly question when you’re planning your holiday!
1. Don't forget to include the dates that you are interested in on the enquiry email. You’d be surprised how often people forget! If you have a range of dates, give them in order of preference. If you are flexible with your dates mention that too.
2. Do put down the numbers of adults and children in your group (and their ages). It really helps, as holiday cottage owners will know immediately if the cottage is the right size and suitable for the group.
3. Let the holiday cottage owner know the reason for your visit. e.g. family holiday, group reunion, walking holiday. At Visit Peaks we don't accept stag or hen parties (sorry) but it would be really helpful to know if that is the purpose of the visit, as we often recommend other holiday cottages in the area that do!
4. Mention if you have pets, what kind, and how many. We do accept dogs (as well as cats, rabbits, gerbils and budgies!), but it never ceases to amaze me that people forget to mention that they want to bring their four-legged friends with them on holiday. Many holiday cottages don't allow pets, so it is a crucial piece of information!
5. Ask for the price and if there are any hidden costs. Are you surprised that this isn't tip number one? Often it is not the key deciding factor in choosing a holiday cottage.
6. Hoping for a discount? Don't ask for 'the best price' (all our prices are good for the size of the accommodation and facilities, of course!) Instead ask if there are any offers on the website at the moment, or ask if there is a newsletter when reductions may be advertised. Don't expect discounts for busy periods or weekends. If you can be flexible and stay mid-week that is the best time to get a discounted price.
7. Feel free to ask as many questions about the facilities as you like. If you are travelling with young children for example, you’ll want to know if there are high chairs, stair gates, fire guards etc. Or if you are with a group of friends, you may want to know about the TV package, wi fi, available board games, etc. If the number of bathrooms/ensuites is important to your group do ask, it might not be obvious from the holiday cottage details, so check it out. As holiday cottage owners we love to talk about our facilities!
8. Ask about the area, what is there to do locally and further afield. We love to tell you about this and we have plenty of insider knowledge to share.
9. Do ask about eating out too. We visit lots of the local pubs and cafes and are always happy to pass on recommendations. This is especially true for large groups as we can tell you which pubs are large enough to fit you all in, how far away they are, the standard of the food, beer, wine, whether dog friendly and plenty more!
10. If you are planning a special birthday or anniversary, ask how we can help. We know caterers and spa services that can be booked at the holiday cottages.
I’ve saved my two “bonus tips” for the end, because they’re the ones people often forget…
11. Don’t forget to ask about mobile phone reception. You don't want to be disappointed (especially with a rural holiday cottage) if the area doesn't have signal. Although for some people that is a bonus!
12. You may also want to ask about wi fi speeds. Our holiday cottage in Litton Mill has wi fi, but it doesn't have the fastest of download speeds, so it is something that you will need to know. It isn't a deal breaker, but it is better to be forewarned!
