There's nothing better than trying local produce and supporting local shops and producers when staying in and visiting an area.

During your self-catering stay in the Peak District that's hopefully what you will want to do to.

Cooking with friends and family is great fun when you have time and lovely fully-equipped holiday cottage kitchens.  So here's our choice of two Peak District foodie shops, each one ideally located for access to either of our holiday cottages.

Tindalls of Tideswell (handy for Riverside House holiday cottage)

Some of the foodie delights to try include a homemade pork pie or a steak and ale or turkey and ham pie, as well as a traditional Fidgety pie made with apples, onions, potatoes and bacon.  It was originally produced in Derbyshire to use up apples during harvest time.  Tindalls have some authentic Derbyshire cakes and biscuits, such as Thar Cakes, Wakes Cakes and a Tidza pud (their take on the Bakewell pudding), all ideal dessert options for self-catering.  Tindalls has a great range of homemade jams, chutneys, pickles, bread, rolls, local made yoghurt as well as a selection of cheeses, olives and pates.  We think your holiday cottage group will all find something to devour here!

The Village Stores Hartington (ideal for Valley View holiday cottage)

This local Peak District shop really does have everything.  Where to start?  Perhaps a fresh coffee while you decide - it really is delicious!  The shelves are full of local jams, pickles, fresh coffee from the Buxton roastery (already mentioned, but truly wonderful), pies, Bakewell pudding as well as plenty of storecupboard ingredients, fresh fruit and veg, fresh meat, cheeses, milk and even traditional sweets.   One of our favourite isles is the selection of beers from Thornbridge Brewery with names such as Tizara, Chiron, AM:PM, Jaipur (our personal fav) and Wild Swan.  We suggesting pairing them with food!  And Jaipur is sometimes available in kegs for the very thirsty!

Running a holiday cottage business is great fun, especially when you get to stay in your own holiday cottages and enjoy the walks, scenery and relaxing in front of the log fire.

However, sometimes there are plenty of jobs to be done and last week was no exception.  We stayed at Riverside House holiday cottage for a week and certainly got a lot ticked off.

Here's some of tasks we acheived:

  • Annual boiler service
  • Annual chimney sweep
  • Fixing some snooker cues and table football in the games room
  • Getting a brand new TV, free sat box and satellite dish for the games room
  • Meeting up with lovely new caterers and sampling their food
  • Meeting Sauced Here a local delivery company where food and provisions are from the Peak District
  • Getting the oven cleaned and given a once over
  • Having a new mattress delivered for the downstairs double bedroom
  • Replacing some older pillows with new ones
  • Giving the utility room and washing machine a spring clean
  • Replacing an extractor fan in the ensuite bathroom

It's very satisfying to know that Riverside House is ship shape and ready for the Christmas and New Year guests.  We stay in our holiday cottages on a regular basis and this is one of the things that makes us different from other holiday cottage owners.  We know how many mugs, glasses, knives, forks are in the kitchen; we know if a light bulb needs replacing or if a door knob is loose.  We know if the pillows and mattresses are comfy and how warm the house feels on a winters day.  We experience our holiday cottages in the same way as our guests do, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

If you are looking for a short break or longer holiday cottage stay in 2018 do get in touch and book direct with owners who know their holiday cottages inside and out!

Are you a dog owner planning your next holiday or short break?  Don't leave your best friend at home or pay for expensive kennels!

We love having dogs come to stay at our holiday cottages, and we welcome up to five well-behaved dogs at any one time.

Our four-legged visitors love the walks from the doors of the cottages, along the river Dove, and walking on the traffic free Monsal Trail are just a couple of the highlights.  Others include safe and secure gardens with outdoor space, log fires with limitless logs for a cosy sleep after a long walk and lots of local pubs and attractions that are dog friendly.

Some of our favourites include the Crich Tramway Museum, which allows dogs on the site and in the trams and there are lovely walks such as the Woodland walk.

Or Peveril Castle above the village of Castleton gives stunning views and you and your dog will appreciate visiting this National Trust property as part of the daily dog walk (it is a bit steep!).  Castleton also has dog friendly pubs for much needed refreshments afterwards.

How about Chatsworth House, which is great for an outdoors visit with your dog?  Dogs are allowed in the gardens, sculpture areas, maze, waterworks areas and there are dog posts just outside the farm area and restaurant.  Assistance dogs are allowed in the house.

Some of our favourite dog friendly pubs include The Red Lion at Litton (a lovely town with a village green) and The Church Inn at Chelmorton.  And newer additions to the dog friendly pub scene are The Old Dog at Thorpe and with new owners The Angler's Rest in Miller's Dale. All these pubs are ideal for using as a base for walking in the Peak District. Take a look at our dog friendly pub guide for more information.

Our holiday cottages in the Peak District will take up to five dogs so if there is a group of you we won't restrict you to one well behaved dog only as many other holiday cottages will do.

We take our own dog on holiday with us to the Peak District, so we want you to enjoy your holiday with your dog too!

If you are thinking of booking a large holiday cottage, here are some key tips when making an enquiry  – from a cottage owner’s point of view. Some may seem obvious, but there’s no such thing as a silly question when you’re planning your holiday!

1. Don't forget to include the dates that you are interested in on the enquiry email.  You’d be surprised how often people forget!  If you have a range of dates, give them in order of preference.  If you are flexible with your dates mention that too.

2. Do put down the numbers of adults and children in your group (and their ages). It really helps, as holiday cottage owners will know immediately if the cottage is the right size and suitable for the group.

3. Let the holiday cottage owner know the reason for your visit. e.g. family holiday, group reunion, walking holiday. At Visit Peaks we don't accept stag or hen parties (sorry) but it would be really helpful to know if that is the purpose of the visit, as we often recommend other holiday cottages in the area that do!

4. Mention if you have pets, what kind, and how many.  We do accept dogs (as well as cats, rabbits, gerbils and budgies!), but it never ceases to amaze me that people forget to mention that they want to bring their four-legged friends with them on holiday.  Many holiday cottages don't allow pets, so it is a crucial piece of information!

5. Ask for the price and if there are any hidden costs.  Are you surprised that this isn't tip number one?  Often it is not the key deciding factor in choosing a holiday cottage.

6. Hoping for a discount? Don't ask for 'the best price' (all our prices are good for the size of the accommodation and facilities, of course!) Instead ask if there are any offers on the website at the moment, or ask if there is a newsletter when reductions may be advertised.  Don't expect discounts for busy periods or weekends. If you can be flexible and stay mid-week that is the best time to get a discounted price.

7. Feel free to ask as many questions about the facilities as you like.  If you are travelling with young children for example, you’ll want to know if there are high chairs, stair gates, fire guards etc. Or if you are with a group of friends, you may want to know about the TV package, wi fi, available board games, etc.  If the number of bathrooms/ensuites is important to your group do ask, it might not be obvious from the holiday cottage details, so check it out.  As holiday cottage owners we love to talk about our facilities!

8. Ask about the area, what is there to do locally and further afield.  We love to tell you about this and we have plenty of insider knowledge to share.

9. Do ask about eating out too.  We visit lots of the local pubs and cafes and are always happy to pass on recommendations.  This is especially true for large groups as we can tell you which pubs are large enough to fit you all in, how far away they are, the standard of the food, beer, wine, whether dog friendly and plenty more!

10. If you are planning a special birthday or anniversary, ask how we can help.  We know caterers and spa services that can be booked at the holiday cottages.

I’ve saved my two “bonus tips” for the end, because they’re the ones people often forget…

11. Don’t forget to ask about mobile phone reception.  You don't want to be disappointed (especially with a rural holiday cottage) if the area doesn't have signal.  Although for some people that is a bonus!

12. You may also want to ask about wi fi speeds.  Our holiday cottage in Litton Mill has wi fi, but it doesn't have the fastest of download speeds, so it is something that you will need to know.  It isn't a deal breaker, but it is better to be forewarned!

Large self catering holiday cottages are ideal for family celebrations, special birthdays, anniversaries, reunions and groups of friends to holiday together.

When you book a large holiday cottage rental, you want to be sure that it is right for you and the group.

As holiday cottage owners we stay in our self catering cottages and use them with friends as our guests do.  That way we know what is needed to create the perfect self catering holiday cottage break.

We check the cupboards to make sure that there are plenty of glasses, so if you want to toast a special birthday or anniversary there's at least one glass each with spares.

We supply enough plates, bowls, mugs so that you can have a dishwasher load on with another whole set available for you to use.

There's plenty of information about the area, the walks, the pubs, restaurants, places to visit.   We can recommend places too for larger groups for dining out for special occasions and pub lunches.   We have contacts with a visiting spa and catering service for those really special group breaks.

For families and adults alike there are games galore, board games for all ages, table football, multi-games table, and at Riverside House a fully equipped games room including table tennis.  Wi fi is available at both cottages.

Both our holiday cottages have Sky Sports, BT Sports, Sky movies so there's never a chance to get bored, not matter what your interests.

And if the weather does turn inclement we provide an unlimited and free supply of logs and kindling so that you can keep dry and warm with a cosy glow.

We will be visiting again soon and making sure everything is in place for your group holiday cottage rental.  Let us know what things you'd like to see included to make the self catering break special?

The best advertising that your holiday cottage can get is direct from your guests.  Testimonials are an excellent way of finding out what is working (or not) and happy guests are more often than not guests that will return again!

Our guests are often happy to provide testimonials and allow us to use them on our websites and other advertising sites too.  Here's some of the most recent.

Riverside House holiday cottage

"The birthday surprise went really well and we had a lovely stay at Riverside House.  The location and house are beautiful (my husband said Riverside House would be his dream home).  We sampled the food at the Red Lion which was excellent as you said.  The only disappointment was not being able to stay longer".

This is from a guest who has just stayed in early January 2017.

Valley View holiday cottage

"We just wanted to say that we enjoyed our stay at your beautiful cottage in Milldale.  The area is beautiful and the cottage had everything we could possibly need and made our stay so easy.  I am sure we will stay again and I have already recommended you to a friend".

This is from a guest who stayed in December 2016.

So holiday cottage owners, don't forget to ask for testimonials, use them in marketing materials, on your website and social media.  Also use your guests comments to find out what they think about your holiday cottages and immediately address anything that wasn't up to stratch.  Guests will appreciate you getting back to them with how you have resolved things.

Use the opportunity to carry on a conversation with your guests after they have stayed.  Try and keep it chatty and gently suggest if they would like to come again or recommend a friend.  Use this opportunity to keep your holiday cottage in their mind for the future.

It's the best marketing that you have!

There are many reasons why holiday cottage owners should stay in their own self catering accommodation.

Unless you actually stay somewhere, sleep there, use the oven, turn on the TV, sit on the sofa, load the dishwasher it is impossible to know what it is really like from the guests point of view.

What works?  What is uncomfortable?  Can you see things differently when sitting down?  Maybe an odd cobweb or two has escaped your view?  Are there cracked plates, chipped glasses, does the diswasher clean properly? Are the pillows comfortable or the duvets warm enough?

We stay in our holiday cottages for at least two or three mid-week nights about every six to eight weeks, sometimes with friends or family, sometimes on our own and sometimes with our dog.  Each time it's a different experience and each time we find little things that we wouldn't pick up otherwise.

Some of the jobs that we seem to do everytime we stay include: removing chipped glasses, plates, bowls and mugs, sharpening knives, putting back loose pages into the information folder, removing out of date information leaflets, replacing light bulbs, tidying the spare duvets and pillows, deleting recorded programmes from the Sky box and mending board games boxes.  All these jobs are small, but when you stay somewhere they are the annoying little things that make an impression.

Unless you stay a night or two in your own holiday cottage, you just won't pick up on all of these things or more.   It is the attention to detail that shows that you really care.  You can only find out exactly what needs attention if you stay in the holiday cottage yourself.

A different blog today.  I love using Twitter and social media to promote my holiday cottages so I thought I'd post a few tips I've learnt along the way.  Mainly this time using the hashtag (#) on Twitter.

  • Use the # symbol to categorize your tweets so that users can simply find you in these areas e.g. #holidaycottage #selfcatering #holidaycheer #familytravel #staycation or #bookdirect - these are some of my favourites, but there's plenty of others
  • Don't try and put too many #s in your tweet though it looks a bit cluttered and off-putting I think!
  • Do use topical #s in your tweets, so how about using #christmassy or #christmaslights to tweet about your holiday cottage Christmas decorations?
  • Try adding stickers to your tweets - it's fun and engaging. Tap to compose your tweet, tap camera and then tap sticker icon and have fun!  Then add a # that's relevant to the stickers.  #dogs #dogfriendly are some of the ones I use with stickers of dogs and paw prints.  Works well for dog friendly holiday cottages!

Direct contact with the holiday cottage owner has got to be the best way for potential guests to find out if the holiday cottage is right for them and their group.

That's why Visit Peaks is happy to support #BookDirect on Twitter and would prefer to speak directly to our customers.

Large booking websites, such as Owners Direct and Holiday Lettings take away that personal touch.  It's even worse on Owners Direct as potential customers have to pay direct through their website and will incur the additional Owners Direct administration fee.

At Visit Peaks we want to spread the holiday cheer and help our customers make up their own minds about our cottages by speaking to us direct.  We can help with accommodation size, things to do in the area, local pubs or restaurants, suitability for children, advice on arrival, parking and many other things that are important.  You only get this when you Book Direct!

So Book Direct and search out the friendly independent holiday cottage owners!

There's an autumn chill in the air and the nights are drawing in.  But there's still plenty to love on a holiday cottage break away.

At both our holiday cottages, Riverside House and Valley View we have lovely log fires and what's more we provide an unlimited free supply of logs.  You can snuggle up to the log fire at any time of the day or evening!  After a long walk in the Peak District countryside there's nothing more welcoming than a warming log fire.

At Riverside house holiday cottage we also have underfloor heating in the kitchen and dining room, so you'd be even more warm and toasty! Both holiday cottages have been insulated too so although large they won't feel chilly.

If you are free to holiday outside of the school terms why not take a look at our mid-week deals for November and December and grab a cosy autumn bargain at our holiday cottages?

There's mid-week breaks at both Riverside House and Valley View holiday cottages, sleeping from 9 to 15 in four to six bedrooms.  At only £699 or £799 for four nights that's great value.  And don't forgot the logs for the log fire are completely free!

The only way to experience your holiday cottage from the guests point of view is to stay in it.  That's not the same as being there and checking it out, you do need to stay there.

I've just come back from a few days at both Riverside House and Valley View holiday cottages in the Peak District.  And I've booked to stay there again in September.  Using up a few mid-week days doesn't cost me very much, but I get to find out a lot.

At Valley View I picked up that the velux black out blinds, which give a great nights sleep, were slightly out of kilter.  Once moved darkness was resumed.  I only saw that because I was lying in bed!

A few other little niggles like broken curtain hooks, a blunt snooker cue for the pool table, a wobbly kitchen door handle and teak oiling the outside bench were all dealt with over the few days.  Some things you just don't notice straight away.

At Riverside House the kindling was topped up (well it is the Peak District), the blunt scissors sharpened and pieces from the puzzles gathered together.  Whilst sitting enjoying the sun on the private patio we also noticed that a tree branch was overgrown and making too much shade, so we did some trimming too.

All these are little things, but add to the big picture.  These are things that the guest will experience and will notice.  They probably won't tell you, but unless you are living there, as a holiday cottage owner you won't pick up on these things.

So holiday cottage owners, go and treat yourselves to a couple of days away and experience the break from the guests angle.

Holiday cottages live and die by their guest reviews and testimonials.  So many people these days are using Trip Advisor to book and plan their holidays too.

So it is vital as a holiday cottage owner to seek out reviews and use them on social media, websites and promotional material.  They can make the difference between a booking or not.

At Riverside House and Valley View holiday cottages, we get some lovely feedback and guests will often email with comments after they have stayed.

Many happy guests are happy to review us on Trip Advisor and here's the link to some of the lovely comments that we have received.

Here's a few snippets:

'We had a fantastic time at Valley View, we couldn't have wished for more.  The cottage itself is stunning, the countryside surrounding it is unspoilt and so peaceful, we will definitely be looking at coming back'.

'Just wanted to say thank you for another beautiful stay at Riverside House.  We loved the changes you have made.  The weather was also fantastic, altogether a lovely time was had by all.  Hopefully we will book again soon'.

Are you planning on a holiday with a large group of friends or a large family group?

It can be really difficult trying to find the right date, the best accommodation and where to stay.

Here's some tips to make it just that bit easier!

Choose one person to act as group coordinator, preferably someone who has some time during the day or evening to deal with emails and phone calls within the group and with accommodation providers.

Next set the date and make sure everyone puts it in their diary or calendar.  For a large group you are going to need to plan far in advance, at least 6 months if not longer if you want school holiday dates (even up to one year in advance).   If you are planning for a special birthday or anniversary the date may not be flexible.  Even more reason to plan far in advance.

Now find which area you'd like to stay in, with a back up destination too.  Look at the map and where you all live.  Where is relatively easy for all the group to get to?  Do you need public transport links?   Do you want a rural break or town break?

List the criteria for the accommodation: number of bedrooms, bathrooms, size of lounge, kitchen, are towels and bed linen required, do you need pet or child friendly accommodation, a garden, games room, wi fi, log fire or off street parking?  Do you want a pub nearby or local shops or do you want to be able to go on long walks from the door?  The list is seemingly endless so pick the top three to five criteria for your search as you probably won't find everything that you want.

Now start looking for accommodation armed with your information.  Many of the large holiday cottage websites allow you to search by date, size of group, region and by pet friendly and child friendly criteria.  This will really narrow down the search.  Take a look at Owner's Direct and Holiday Lettings amongst the big ones, but also look for regional specific websites.  In the Peak District there's the Ashborne Accommodation website and Visit Tideswell, both run by local holiday cottage owners.

In the organic search engine listings you can also search for 'sleeps 9', 'sleeps 10' etc and the area or region too.  This will then bring up plenty of independent holiday cottage owners websites.

You will end up with a list of possibilities.  Start sending out emails to the owners direct or via the larger websites you can send a number of emails at once.  Key questions are size of accommodation, availability, pet, child friendly and of course price!

Let the group coordinator handle all this and draw up a short-list of three.  You may not have much time to decide as the large holiday cottages book up fast!  Give everyone in the group a deadline to respond and pick a favourite and a second and even third choice.

Get the group coordinator to call the holiday cottage owner direct, speaking to them will answer so many of the questions you have and show that you are genuinely interested.  You will also get a chance to pick their brains about the area, where to eat, visit and what facilities the cottage has.

Be prepared to pay a deposit of 25% or more to book the holiday cottage.  The coordinator of the group can pay that up front and claim back from the group later.  Find out when the balance and breakages bond is required and let the group know when their share of the payment is needed.  Collect this in advance of the due date.
