Places to spot wildlife in the Peak District

See http://mediafiles.thedms.co.uk/Publication/DS/cms/pdf/pe-wildpeak1.pdf for more information and a map depicting the location of the different wildlife sites.

In total there are 42 nature reserves in Derbyshire.  There is plenty more information on the following website covering all the 42 reserves.  It includes places to go, things to do, local shops, sanctuarys and appeals:

The Vale of Edale is surrouned by the hills and moors of the Dark Peak and much of it is owned and managed by the National Trust.  There is a wide variety of wildlife to be found there and it is possible to see merlin, grouse, olden plover, meadow pipit and curles and also mountain hares.  In the valleys there are many ferns and lichens and on the ledges and crevices it is possible to see the nesting sites of ravens and peregrines.

The Vale of Edale is situated in the Hope Valley close to the town of Castleton.  It has a station and more information can be obtained from the Moorland Visitor Centre.

The Longshaw Estate is owned by The National Trust and covers 680 hectares of a range of wildlife habitats.  It is beautiful in Autumn when the leaves change colour and there is also impressive fungi.  The meadows have many unusual species of plants including frog orchid and dyer's greenweed.  The Longshaw Estate is situated close to Tideswell and if you are staying at Riverside House holiday cottage is worth a visit.  www.riversidehouse-peakdistrict.co.uk
The craggy ridges of the Roaches dominate the area and it is possible to see bilberry and cowberry standing out among the dry heather of the moorland.  From August the moors are purple with beautiful flowering heather.  The best time to view the Moorland birds is in the spring and summer.  These include red grouse, curlew and stonechat.  The postcode for The Roaches is ST13 8UB and they are close to the market town of Leek.  If you are staying at Valley View holiday cottage it is an easy drive to the lovely countryside and views of The Roaches.  www.dovedaleholidaycottage.co.uk
The River Wye is very popular with anglers because there are large numbers of wild brown trout and grayling.  It is a limestone river and its alkalinity provides a rich source of nutrients resulting in a wealth of insects, invertebrates and general wildlife.  The fish also have a constant supply of food which means they grow quickly.  It is also possible to spot water voles along the river banks as well as dippers.  The rivers flows just south of Tideswell then on to Bakewell and south of Haddon Hall.  Riverside House holiday cottage is situated on the banks of the river and if you are luck you will see plenty of brown trout (they are happy to be fed from the bridge), ducks, swans and the occasional dipper.  www.riversidehouse-peakdistrict.co.uk
